HW: Write a poem a day! 23
After we all write down our agendas and Daisy reads her blog, Ms. Nakada shows us a poem titled "miss rosie" by Lucille Clifton. It seems to be about an old woman who has lost her charm. We do a call of words and write a poem. Quinn, Jacqueline, Omune, Sparky, Saad, and Ma Kaiia read their poem out loud.
We read another poem by Lucille Clifton called "wishes for sons". It is about how she wishes for her sons to go through the same struggle that girls go through. None of the i's were capitalized. After talking about Lucille Clifton's aesthetic, We all get some time to write our own response poem to "wishes to sons", and Ms. Nakada says she expects many of us to incorporate "the last tampon" in our poem because we read it out loud with her.
The bell just rang and tomorrow we are going over grades. Next week we will be testing!

Write a poem a day - 22!
Well, hello everyone! Today class got off to an... interesting start, to say the least. After Justin read his blog, Ms. Nakada showed us how we were going to get to the AR tests through the new (and not particularly pretty) Emerson website. Then, she showed us William Carlos Williams' poem "This Is Just to Say" which we read last year with Ms. Barbeau. Her understanding of the poem seemed to be a bit unique, if you will, and Sabrina wasn't afraid to share the possibility of this poem being about a girl being 'deflowered.' We also read "To a Poor Old Woman", which also raised some suspicion about its meaning, and Ms. Nakada explained that if we were going to think of the poem like that, then it would be about... gah, this is really the most awkward day for doing the blog. I'd say it, but everyone was here yesterday, so I'm sure you remember what we discussed.
After that, we worked on writing our own poems in the style of "This Is Just to Say," which, as usual, few people chose to share. We saw some examples of poetry collections from students of years before. Now we're watching a poem on YouTube called "To This Day" about calling people names and beauty and a bunch of other things. It has really interesting illustrations and video clips and I think it can really open your eyes.
During the middle of the video the bell rang, so I'm going to pack up now. Bye!

Then we came back to class and started our test on The Book Thief.
That was all we had time for today!

Inquiry Projects due Monday
We just got back from the poetry assembly and only have about 10 minutes left of class. In the assembly, there were actors that acted out poems of many different poets such as Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Po, Langston Hughes, and Walt Whitman as well as some poets I hadn't heard of like Dorthy Parker and a woman that had three names that I don't remember.
In class, we're finishing up The Book Thief notes and then working on our summaries. Ms. Nakada just reminded us that inquiry projects are due on Monday, but you can turn them in if you're done. Everyone is working on their summaries and Sparky just gave a minute and a half warning. I'm going to start packing up now. Byyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Inquiry Project
Thanks to Orson I'm doing my blog today... thanks. Right now we are talking about poetry and what information we should have. We are now writing our questions for the cornell notes. I am liking NaPoWriMo way more than NaNoWriMo. People say I'm a natural poet, I don't think so. One of our questions for the notes is: What themes are in your poetry? My poems are mainly about basketball.
Now we are reading the Walt Whitman poem: O me! O Life! Now we are reviewing the words we don't understand. Ms. Nakada is defining a bunch of words for us. Now we are watching an apple commercial based on O me! O Life! Now we are writing our third poem. Sebastian still has nail polish on his nails... sucks. With the few minutes of class left I am going to write my poem so Bye! Wait no we have more time so we are writing more The Book Thief notes.

After reading Langston Hughes poems Ms. Nakada passed out another sheet of paper with poems by Walt Whitman on it. The class then starts reading a very famous poem called "O Captain! My Captain!" and I'm pretty sure I've heard this poem before, but I can't remember where from. This poem is talking about president Lincoln's death and how the United States had to keep pushing through the war.
After reading this poem and understanding it we worked on The Book Thief notes. After writing down our notes we got started on writing our third poems for NaPoWriMo. Everyone is really quite and working right now except for Mariam and Sabrina who are laughing about something on a binder and Kameron who is just staring off. Never mind Kameron started working now. The bell has rung so I got to go. Bye

So hey guys I'm here doing the blog. Don't worry Orson I WILL not choose you next. So we start off with Ms. Nakada saying Happy NaPoWriMo which is a whole month of writing deep poems to express feelings, which I see as a whole month of rhyming a couple of words. After we talk about NaPoWriMo for like 15 seconds, we start to take notes on a poem by Langston Hughes. Jesi just read a poem and AJ keeps correcting her, and I think there must be something going on. So, Ms. Nakakda just said 'Tots Adorbs" umm weird? Anyway now we are taking out a paper so we can write our very first poem for napowrimo. Its pretty quiet in here, all I hear are deep thoughts.
